Sustainability

Sustainability is a word that covers a wide range of topics, and is both complex and interesting for that very reason.

Sustainability issues regarding planning considerations include:
  • protecting rural arable land for future primary production;
  • conservation and enhancement of natural resources and landscapes;
  • protecting and maintaining water quality and acquifers;
  • reducing reliance on private vehicles for commuting/transportation (this involves both planning strategically to promote pedestrians or cyclists, and accommodating future public transportation avenues.  Patumahoe is ideally situated on an operating rail corridor for future train services).
  • Planning community services and facilities to reduce the amount of travelling residents undertake in the course of their routine.
There is a wealth of information online regarding these issues.  As you can imagine, Patumahoe is not the only community going through changes.

The Ministry for the Environment is actively supporting community led initiatives. The
Beacon Pathway consortium deals with sustainability issues in residential and business networks, and is hosted by Sustainability NZ.

Transition towns is a worldwide network of communities in a state of change, looking forward. There are NZ communities involved in this initiative, the link below will take you to the New Zealand homepage.
